Alma Martha (Wilhelm) Campbell January 14, 1927 ~ March 9, 2026 (age 99)

Graveside services for Alma Campbell, 99, of Portales will be held at 2:00 PM, Thurs., Mar. 12, 2026, in the Portales Cemetery with Pastor Don Thomas officiating.  All of her friends from Golden Acres will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Alma Martha Campbell was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Bastrop, TX to the home of Augusta (Matjeka) and Joe Frank Wilhelm and passed from this life early on the morning of Mar. 9, 2026, in Portales, NM.

Mrs. Campbell lived her early life in Bastrop.  She was working at a dime store in San Antonio, TX when she met Walter Campbell.  They were married on June 30, 1945.  They moved to New Mexico soon after marrying and first lived between Clovis and Portales.  After a brief time, they moved to Clovis where she took a job at a local laundry.

For the majority of her adult life, Mrs. Campbell was a homemaker.  She was an active member of the Homemakers Club.  Alma was an accomplished seamstress.  In addition to sewing, she was an excellent cook.  After moving to Portales in 1965, she began raising a truck garden and sold vegetables.  She loved to read and inspired her children to develop a love of reading as well.  Mrs. Campbell was a devout Christian and a member of the Central Christian Church and taught her children with Bible stories.  In 2003 she moved to Golden Acres where she made many wonderful friends.

She is survived by her son, Walter Campbell of Portales; her daughter, Mary “Katherine” McAlister of Portales; and four grandchildren, Matt McAlister, and Brian, Robin and Steven Campbell.  She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Joe, Henry, Johnny, Andy and Freddie Wilhelm, four sisters, Annie Meuth, Ella Barton, Lizzie Hefner and Katie Cain, her son-in-law, Charles McAlister who died June 25, 2023, and by her beloved husband, Walter A. Campbell who died Jan. 12, 2001.
