SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico baseball team traveled to St. Mary’s for a three-game weekend series. In Friday’s doubleheader, the Greyhounds fell 8-6 in the first contest and 21-3 in the second.

GAME ONE: STMU 8, ENMU 6

The Hounds started off strong in their first at bat with Braeton Matthews hitting a lead off triple to right field. Cole Luedeking followed that up with an RBI single to give Eastern a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Rattlers responded with three runs on three hits to gain the slim 3-1 advantage. St. Mary’s then saw four runs score in the bottom of the third to stretch that lead out to 7-1.

Eastern continued to battle however and saw one run score in the fifth inning and then a solo home run from Andres Quintana in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-3.

In the seventh inning, Trevor Moses led off with a double to left field and then rounded home after a wild pitch and a Nicholas Tamez RBI-single. Rio Granger homered to left field to bring the Hounds within one run of the lead.

The Rattlers managed to tally one run in the bottom of the frame and then shut down the Greyhound offense the rest of the way to secure the close 8-6 win.

Offensively, B. Matthews led the way as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Tamez and Quintana both went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Josh Lewis got the start on the mound for Eastern and was also credited with the loss. He had three strikeouts in three innings of work. Alex Kuhn and Cooper Hamilton finished out the game.

GAME TWO: STMU 21, ENMU 3 (7 INNINGS)

The Rattlers got the bats going quickly in the second game of the night, taking a 10-0 lead after one inning.  St. Mary’s saw those 10 runs score on six hits and one error, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Fernando Zubia.

St. Mary’s added four runs in the third inning and six runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 20-0.

The Hounds got on the board in the top of the fifth with two runs. Kian Johnston started things off with walk and then rounded home on a double from B. Matthews. B. Matthews went on to score after a single from Luedeking followed by an error.

In the top of the sixth, Eastern tallied one more run when Johnston recorded an RBI single.

The Rattlers responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth and then held the Hounds off in the seventh to secure the 21-3 win.

Tamez finished the contest 2-for-3 at the plate with one run, while Johnston was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

On the mound, James Romero got the start and the loss. Liam SabistonJames Puga, and Robert Nidy also saw time on the hill.

Eastern and St. Mary’s meet again tomorrow (4/3) at 12 p.m. to finish out the weekend series.
