Betty Elliott Obituary

Funeral services for Betty Sue Elliott will be held Saturday, August 29th, 2026 in the  Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales, New Mexico with Cary Russell officiating.  The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 10:00 AM until service time.  Burial to follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Dora with Derrick Schacher, Steven Sorrells, Branden Billingsley, Brian Gore, Mason McGee and John Sharp serving as pallbearers.  We invite family and friends to join us as we celebrate Betty’s beautiful life and honor the love and memories she gave us.

Betty Sue (Chambers) Elliott was born on September 14, 1941, to Arthur A. Chambers and Myrtle (Bowen) Chambers in Gorman, Texas. Betty graduated from Dora High School in 1960.

Betty married the love of her life, Jimmy Elliott, on September 21, 1961. Together they had two daughters, Gay Cherri and Jill La Rae. Betty and Jimmy moved to Mesquite, Texas, in 1965.  Betty was managing the apartment complex where they lived when Jill was born. Betty went back to work a few years after having Jill. She went to work for Texas Instruments in Dallas, Texas.

In 1970, they moved back to New Mexico and lived in various towns throughout the state. This is when Betty began her career in banking. She worked for various banking institutions, including FNB of Belen, Norwest, Wells Fargo, FNB of Ft. Sumner, and FNB of Alamogordo. After retiring from banking, Betty and Jimmy bought the Lakeview Inn at Ft. Sumner Lake. When Lakeview Inn burned in 1976, Jimmy and Betty still traveled and he still worked as a lineman and she as a banker.

Betty spent many years caring for Jimmy after his back surgeries and throughout his chemotherapy treatments. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved her family more than anything.

Betty loved her fur babies. She missed Sam and Scooter dearly, and her little Molly will miss her deeply.
In her final months, Betty was blessed to call Country View Living in Dimmitt, Texas, home. She loved the staff and her friends there so very much. The friendships she made and the kindness and care she received brought her comfort and happiness. She was truly grateful for the people who surrounded her, and they became a special part of her life and her story. Her family will always be thankful to the wonderful staff and friends at Country View Living for loving and caring for Betty.

Betty was also blessed to have the compassionate care of her hospice team from Vital Caring Group. Their kindness, comfort, and gentle care meant so much to Betty and her family during her final days. They treated her with dignity, compassion, and love, and helped make her final journey peaceful and surrounded by care. Her family will be forever grateful for the support they provided to Betty and to all of us during such a precious and difficult time.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Leon Elliott; her parents, Arthur A. Chambers and Myrtle Chambers; her in-laws, John Henry & Alene Elliott; her brothers, William Jack Chambers and Lohman Chambers; her sisters, Dorothy Varnell Orendorff, Floy Lou, and Zelda Fay; her sisters-in-law, Francis Kreidler, Clara Elliott, and Reva Sharp; her brother-in-law, Roger Elliott; and her nieces, Patsy McDaniel and Charlotte Whiddon.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Gay and Elmo Sorrells of Kress, Texas, and Jill Billingsley of Tulia, Texas; grandchildren, Tausha and Derrick Schacher, Nicole and Brian Gore, Brianna and Mason McGee, Branden and Molly Billingsley, Steven and Sara Sorrells, and Shaye and Ty Sorrells; great-grandchildren, Dayson, Daniel, Tate and wife Khailey, Seth and wife Savannah, Sage, Trey, Kensley, Brixton, Slater, Kolton, Kelsi, Kaity, and Olan; and one great-great-grandson on the way, Otis Jack Gore.

Betty leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, family, friendship, and countless memories that will be cherished forever. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
