On Saturday, October 18, 2025, at approximately 8 a.m., officers with the Portales Police Department responded to the area of 1st and Chicago regarding a motor vehicle crash with injuries. Upon arrival officers found two vehicles that had been involved and all occupants of both vehicles were transported to Roosevelt General Hospital for their injuries. The driver of one vehicle was a 60-year-old female, Monica Diaz, of Portales, who later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The driver of the other vehicle, 25-year-old Sebastian Torres Gonzales of Portales, was transported to a Lubbock area hospital for his injuries.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Torres Gonzales on multiple charges including homicide by vehicle resulting from Driving While Intoxicated. Torres Gonzales was traveling southbound on Chicago at a high rate of speed and crossed over the median colliding with the other vehicle resulting in the crash.
