James Monte Mapp was born on June 6, 1947, in Littlefield, Texas, to Lushel and Lorene Mapp of Anton, Texas. When he was six months old, his family moved to House, New Mexico, where he began his early education. At the age of nine, they relocated to Levelland, Texas, where he spent the remainder of his school years and graduated from Levelland High School in 1965. He attended South Plains College for a short time and was drafted into the military, although he was not required to serve.
On April 24, 1967, Monte married the love of his life, Sally Irene Tillett. Together they built a beautiful family and shared many years of love, laughter, and dedication to one another. They were blessed with seven children and twelve grandchildren. In November 1989, Monte moved his family to Dora, New Mexico, where he became deeply involved in serving his community. He joined the Dora Fire and EMS Department, responding to countless fires and accidents throughout his years of service. He worked tirelessly to maintain and improve the department #39’s equipment and ISO ratings, always striving to leave things better than he found them.
Monte was also a dedicated member and president of the Dora School Board, where he worked to improve educational opportunities for local children. He played a key role in gaining community support for the bond election that led to the construction of a new school. Alongside his sons, he helped clean and maintain the ball field areas and worked on water lines that supplied water to the baseball field. He also served on the Dora Water Department, continuing his lifelong commitment to helping others.
A true jack-of-all-trades, Monte wore many hats throughout his life. He worked as a grocery store manager, contract mover, farmer, and mechanic. No matter the job, he approached it with determination, skill, and a willingness to lend a helping hand. More than anything, Monte was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his quick wit, and a laugh that could fill a room and bring a smile to everyone around him.
Monte was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents, James Lushel and Merle Lorene Mapp; his brother, John Wayne Mapp; his brother’s wife Vivian Mapp; and his niece, Gwendolyn Miller. He is survived by his wife, Irene Mapp; His Nephew Wayne Mapp; his children, Mason and Jolinda Mapp, Jason Mapp, Michael and Amanda Mapp, Misty and Pieter Nortje, Melissa and Andrew Wilson, Jenifer and David Meeks, Justin Mapp, and Roy and Shala Buckley; and his grandchildren, Jayvyn, Shawna, Emalyn, Hannah, Jeremy, Jaylee, Raydyn, Emily, Ella, Macilyn, James, and Nolan.
Monte leaves behind a legacy of hard work, service, laughter, and love. His impact on his family, friends, and community will not be forgotten, and the memories he created will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
