In 1960, he and another friend joined the United States Air Force.  It was that same year that he married Carolyn Watkins.  The couple had a son together, but later divorced.  During his service years, he was stationed at Larson Air Force Base in Moses Lake, WA.  Following his discharge in 1964, he returned to Portales to make his home, and went back to the Post Office.  In addition, he attended classes at Eastern New Mexico University, and graduated in 1976.  Jim had worked his way up in the Post Office, and following his graduation, he was promoted to the position of Post Master.  He served in that capacity until 1990.

Following his retirement he became a realtor.  In addition, he drove for Hamilton Auto, transferring cars from one location to another.  In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time in Ruidoso.  He also built a number of elkhorn chandeliers.  Jim loved working in his yard, as well as reading and working crossword puzzles.  Through the years, he had amassed a large collection of postage stamps.

It was on Dec. 31, 1982 in Ruidoso, that he was married to Jane Millar.  With that marriage, he gained four more children, three daughters and a son.  He and Jane enjoyed more than 40 years together prior to her death on January 18, 2023.
