Graveside services for John “Junior” Wooley, 82, of Portales will be held at 2:00 PM, Thurs., Mar. 2, 2017 in the Portales Cemetery with Rev. Clyde Gilman officiating. All of Junior’s many friends will be honorary pallbearers.
John “Junior” Wooley was born Jan. 11, 1935 in Dora, to the home of Alma (Wilmoth) and John Foster Wooley, and died Feb. 27, 2017 in Portales. Junior, as everyone called him, grew up in Dora. He was a 1953 graduate of Portales High School. Following graduation, he joined the Air Force, and was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY when he met Wanda Cranor through mutual friends. They were married Aug. 1, 1958 in Hopkinsville, KY.
When Junior was discharged from the service, they returned to Portales, and Junior worked with his dad for several years. He eventually went to work for Curtis Breshears at Spra-Green Fertilizer in Portales, and remained there for 30 years until he was forced to retire due to health reasons. Junior enjoyed playing golf with his friends, and drinking coffee with them at the local donut shop. When he was idle at home he often did word search puzzles, and crosswords and of late played computer games. He was a member of the Baptist church.
He is survived by Wanda, his wife of 58 years of their home; a son, Dale Wooley of Hobbs and a daughter, Liz Wooley of Portales; and two sisters, Peggy Gilman of Albuquerque and Frances Stevens of Springfield, MO. He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Wooley and three sisters, Janie Willoughby, Jackie Mae Stacy and Patsy Rogers.
