Funeral services for Johnnie “J.L.” Evans will be at Wheeler Mortuary at 10:00 AM, Fri., Aug. 12, 2022.  Burial will be at Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Darrell Martin III, Steven Dallas, David Mitchell, James Mitchell, Matt Hromas, and Weston White. Johnnie Lynn (JL) Evans left this world on August 4, 2022 after a brief battle with cancer. Johnnie was born on January 5, 1934 in Wheeler, Texas to John Henry Evans and Mary Jetton Blackwell-Evans. Johnnie was raised in West Texas until the sixth grade when his family bought a small farm near Portales, New Mexico. After high school, he joined the Marines, where he served as a court reporter during the Korean War. During this time, he met and married, Hildamae Cooksey and they had three daughters. They returned to the family farm near Portales, New Mexico, where he farmed for many years. Later in life, he started buying cattle for various packing houses until retirement. On Sept. 3, 1976 in Clovis he was married to Betty Ruth Pinkston-Johnston. They enjoyed traveling in their RV after his retirement.

He was a member of the Shriners International with participation in the Clovis Shrine Club and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters. He was also a member of the Clovis Elks Lodge.

His is survived by his three daughters: Lynda Mitchell of Amarillo, TX, Glynda Dallas of Clovis, NM, and Rhonda Hardy of Bedford, TX; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Sherry Johnston of Lubbock, TX and a stepdaughter, Darlene Johnston of Bethany, OK and his grandchildren Michelle (Matt) Hromas, David Mitchell, James (Jessi) Mitchell, Rebekah (Weston) White, Jennefier Dudley, Steven (Samantha) Dallas, Darrell (Jaclyn) Martin III, Renee (Randy) Terry, Jeremy (Vanessa) Johnston, and Malissa (Clay) Trotter. He is also survived by 24 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his baby brother, Glendale, his parents, and his wife, Betty Evans who died May 26, 2021 after almost 45 years of marriage.
