The Portales Lady Rams started their 2020-2021 season just 27 days ago, because of COVID-19 statewide restrictions. The Lady Rams have faced opponents from mainly the southeast portion of the state in that short time period, most of which were games they won!

In fact, out of 12 season games, Portales only lost 3. Twice to Goddard and only once against Artesia. They’ve defeated Texico, Clovis, Hobbs, Roswell, Carlsbad, Artesia (once) and Lovington in the weeks preceding the state tournament.

With 9 wins under their belt, the Lady Rams set themselves up to join just 8 other teams in the NMAA Class 4A State Tournament in Moriarty.

The tournament began on March 29th, with the Lady Rams as #5 seed. Their quarterfinal matchup was against Hope Christian, a private school out of Albuquerque, and began at 5 pm. on the 29th.

The Lady Huskies (ranked #4) proved to be a tough opponent unfortunately, and came out on top in all 3 sets. The scores were 25-17, 25-21 and 25-14, all in favor of Hope Christian.

The loss ended the Lady Rams’ short season shy of their goal, but for 27 days of a volleyball season that usually lasts several months, 9-4 is nothing to be disappointed by.

The girls finished their season as number 5 in the state, and will be looking forward to starting the 2021 season in August like usual.

Here are their stats for the season:

  • Overall Record: 9-4
  • League: 3-3
  • Non-league: 6-0
  • Head to head: 0-1
  • Home: 4-2
  • Away: 5-1
  • Win %: .692
  • District %: .500
  • Ranking: 10th overall statewide, 5th in Class 4A
