Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce’s Ambassadors announce the upcoming deadline for girls age 5-10 to enter the 2016 Little Miss Merry Christmas Contest.
As a part of Portales’ holiday tradition, the Little Miss Merry Christmas Contest fundraises for the white Christmas lights that are on display throughout town and on the Courthouse. The contest runs from Tuesday, Nov. 7 until 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30. An official pre-parade Coronation Ceremony will take place at the historic Yam Theatre, 219 S. Main Street, on Thursday, December 1 at 6 p.m. The Christmas Jubilee and Lighted Christmas Parade will be Friday, Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m. starting at the City Rec Center and ending downtown.
The contestant that raises the most money through donations collected by her sponsor and through additional fundraising efforts will be crowned Little Miss Merry Christmas with all runners-up receiving the title of Princess.
All contestants must attend an information meeting at the Chamber of Commerce, 100 South Avenue A, at 6 p.m. on Nov. 7. Photos of the contestants will be taken for use by the Portales News-Tribune. NOTE: Previous winners, those who were crowned Little Miss Merry Christmas, are ineligible to re-enter the contest.
Celebrating its 30th year, the Portales Christmas Jubilee is a holiday family tradition. This year’s activities include the Christmas Jubilee Lighted Parade with the presentation of the 2016 Little Miss Merry Christmas royal court as well as music on the square. Santa Claus will ride in the parade then be on the square immediately following the parade to talk to children about their Christmas list. There is no entry fee for the parade but registration is required.
