PORTALES, NM – Jan. 4, 2022 – Eastern New Mexico University invites community members and ENMU students, faculty and staff to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the week of Jan. 17.

Sponsored by ENMU’s Office of Campus Life, the City of Portales Cultural Affairs Committee, and the New Mexico Martin Luther King, Jr. State Commission, the week kicks off with a commemorative march on MLK Day, Monday, Jan. 17, with a memorial walk from the Portales Memorial Building at 200 E. 7th Street to the MLK tree in the middle of the ENMU campus. Refreshments will be served.

Tuesday Jan. 18, brings additional activities on ENMU’s campus with a special lunch served at the Crossroads Café Dining Hall in  at the Campus Union (CUB). There is a Non-Violent Direct Action Advocacy presentation and discussion at the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts building, Room 112, at 4 p.m., followed by a presentation of the film “Within Our Gates,” which will be shown at 7 p.m. at the University Theatre Center (UTC) on the main stage.

Minority business owners Glen Johnson of Coach J’s Barbecue and Darrelyn McCloud of SNAP Fitness are featured in a discussion of minority entrepreneurship in Portales on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 4 p.m. in the College of Business (COB), Room 117. The week’s observances wrap up on Thursday, Jan. 20, with a 4 p.m. poetry recitation in the CUB Sandia Room.
