VERNON, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico rodeo team had their best outing in recent memory this weekend at the Vernon College Rodeo with a fourth place team finish on the men’s side and a seventh place finish on the women’s side.
Freshman Tarren Washburn and junior Tee McLeod each finished in the top five of their respective events to combine for the team’s 240 points for the rodeo. Junior Madelyn Schauer continued her hot start to the 2019-20 season with 75 points of her own in the goat tying to lead the women’s team to a seventh place finish.
McLeod and his partner Stefan Ramone finished second in the average for the team roping event with a total time of 12.8 after winning Saturday night’s short round with a time of 5.6. Washburn and his partner Garrett Baldwin of Cisco Junior College finished just behind McLeod’s team in third place in the average after finishing second in the long round with a time of 5.7 in the long round and 7.8 and a third place finish in the short round.
Schauer made it back to Saturday night’s championship round once again with a time of 7.1 in the long round and then rose up the standings in the average thanks to a second place time of 6.5 seconds on Saturday night to split fourth and fifth place in the average. The junior ranks second in the Southwest Region with 225.0 points through three rodeos this season in the goat tying event and sits in a tie for seventh place in the barrel racing with 110.0 points.
Each team also had one representative in the short round that didn’t count towards the team points in Trey Jackson and Danica Hoppman. Jackson made it back to Saturday night in the steer wrestling with a time of 5.9, but didn’t record a time in the short round while Hoppman finished fifth in the barrel racing with a total time of 35.28.
Hoppman ranks just behind Schauer in the regional standings with 60.00 points so far this season in the barrel racing.
Eastern New Mexico rodeo will compete in their fourth rodeo of the year this weekend at the Frank Phillips College Rodeo in Canadian, Texas.
