Funeral services for Dona Hamar, 84, of Portales, will be at 10:00 AM, Thurs., Dec. 6, 2018 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Pete Jaramillo officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Jerry Griffin, James Griffin, Keith Seefeld, Cody Hamar, Tyler Hamar, Robert Ulrick and Chris Hamar serving as pallbearers. All her many friends and neighbors will be honorary pallbearers.

Dona Elizabeth Hamar was born October 31, 1934 at the family homestead in Duran, Torrance County, New Mexico to the home of Nettie (Maize) and Roy Jackson Griffin, and died on November 27, 2018 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas from complications of a stroke suffered in her home in Portales, New Mexico.

Dona’s early life was spent growing up on the family farm. Her family moved from Duran to the Portales area circa 1939, and she resided there the rest of her life. On July 14, 1950 in Portales, she was married to Roger Hamar.

For many years, Dona was a member of Portales Victory Life Church. She volunteered for the church at the Portales Dream Center where she helped people improve their lives. During her working life, Dona was employed in the Portales Public School system, at Rogers Farm Service, Anthonys Department Store, Portales Abstract Company and then finally at the Roosevelt County Soil and Water District where she was known as the “tree lady. She retired at age 80.

Dona enjoyed growing flowers, plants and raising chickens at her home. She could be counted on to be direct and tell it the way she saw it. She was a member of the Rebekahs (Independent Order of Odd Fellows). She loved to travel and experience all there was to offer from life. A life-long learner, she embraced technology and learned to type and operate computer systems later in life.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was loved by her family as well as by members of the community, and will be forever missed.

Dona is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Janie Hamar of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ken and Linda Hamar of Wylie, Texas and Kyle and Deborah Hamar of Clackamas, Oregon; a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Rusty Davis of Portales; 7 grandchildren, Sheri (Robert) Ulrick, Keith J. Seefeld and companion, Cathi Dockal, Chirstopher (Meredith) Hamar, Cody (Lindsey) Hamar, Crickett (Matt) Keller, Tyler Hamar and Erik Hamar, and 13 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her father, Roy Jackson Griffin born in Kerrville, Kerr County, Texas, and her mother, Nettie L. Griffin born in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma; as well as by a son, Dustin Brint, Hamar, her two brothers, David Leroy (Sonny) Griffin and Jimmy Dale Griffin, her sister Ysleta Edna Shipp, and by her beloved husband, Roger, who died Mar. 14, 2000.
