Memorial services for Peggy Prater, 88, of Dora, will be announced at a later time.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Heartland House, where Peggy stayed for the last several weeks of her life, at 2605 N County Rd 1700, Lubbock, TX 79416.

Peggy Marie Prater was born May 20, 1932 in Bailey County, TX to the home of Ivy “Leafie” (Harriman) and Troy Howard “Jack” Shackleford, and died on Sat. evening, Mar. 6, 2021 in Lubbock, TX.

Peggy began her school career in Dora, but during her childhood, the family moved several times, but she returned to Dora during her junior year of high school, and graduated in 1949.  Nearly a year later, on Feb. 15, 1950 in Farwell, TX she was married to Billy Darrell Prater.  For several years she was a fulltime homemaker and mom.  In the early 1960’s she began her college studies, and graduated in 1968 with a teaching degree.  In 1976, she completed her Master’s Degree.   Peggy began teaching in Dora in the fall of 1968, and for the next 26 years she taught first grade, retiring in 1994.

Peggy was a faithful member of the Dora Church of Christ.  She enjoyed sewing and quilting and all sorts of needlework crafts.  Peggy also spent a great deal of time studying the genealogy of her family.   For many years she was a member of the Dora Homemaker’s Club where she served in several offices.  In the 1990’s both she and her husband were inducted into the NEA Hall of Fame.  In 2011 they were chosen as Roosevelt County Pioneers of the Year.  She and her husband were very proud of the fact that they had traveled in their camper to all of the lower 48 states, and had also visited both Alaska and Hawaii completing their goal of visiting all 50 states.

She is survived by Billy Prater, her husband of more than 71 years of their home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stan and Cindy Prater of Milwaukee, WI and Benny and Dorenda Prater of Nixa, MO; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Russell Campbell of Wichita Falls, TX; eleven grandchildren, Brandi (Brent) Hodges, Chris (Lauren) Burke, Bobby (Kate) Sowder, Justin (Lesya) Sowder, Jakki (Brenden) Schneider, Emily (Michael) Robinson, Nathan (Janiece) Campbell, Ryan Campbell, Daniel (Shannon) Toler, David (Jenny) Toler and Tabitha (Jeff) Chan; 25 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vada Nelson of Richardson, TX.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, James D. “Bo” Shackleford and a sister, Sandra Kay McKelvy.
