Animal Control Officers attend state certification classes and are trained to handle calls for service that involve domestic animals or wildlife. All dogs and cats kept within the city limits must get a Portales city license. This license can be picked up at the Animal Shelter. Owners should bring proof of vaccination for their pet(s). The license costs $5.00 per year. In addition to the individual animal registration, Animal Control is responsible for issuing Domestic Livestock, Residential Multi-Animal and Commercial Permits. Adoption Fee $25.00 Spay / Neuter Fee $30.00. This fee is refundable upon proof that the animal was spayed or neutered. Vaccination Fee $30.00. This fee is refundable upon proof of vaccination.
