FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PORTALES, NM (September 28, 2026) – The Portales Fire Department advises residents that the New Mexico State Forester has rescinded statewide fire restrictions effective 8:00 a.m. on September 28, 2026, following recent rainfall that significantly reduced wildfire danger across the state.

Although state restrictions have been lifted, residents are urged to continue practicing safe burning habits. More than 1,700 wildfires have occurred across New Mexico this year, with approximately 70% determined to be human-caused and preventable. Common causes include debris burning, equipment use, and improper disposal of hot ashes.

The Portales Fire Department reminds residents that all applicable City of Portales ordinances governing burning and fire safety remain in effect.

City of Portales Ordinance Requirements

The Portales Fire Department reminds all City residents that even though state restrictions have been lifted, the ban only applied to non-municipal, Federal, and Tribal Land, all local ordinances regarding open burning remain in effect and must be followed.
