On Saturday 33 athletes and 15 volunteers participated in the 25th Annual Heritage Days Fun Run/Walk in Portales. The runners and walkers enjoyed energized music, fresh fruit, and light winds, finishing in front of the Memorial Building.
The men’s winner was Zachery Green, 31, who covered the 2-mile course in 13:13. Second-place went to Gabriel Duran, 18, in 13:28. Shane Brannen, 43, was 3rd in 14:27.
The women’s winner was Jeanel Fitzpatrick, 41, in 17:34. Fitzpatrick also won the 2-mile event in 2021, and this time finished ahead of two-time defending champion Emma Hurren. Hurren, 19, placed 2nd in 18:54. Luisa Lucero finished 3rd in 19:01. All 33 registered participants completed the course.
The male and female winners won awards, and medals went to the top-three male and female finishers in five age categories. Net proceeds supported the Portales Woman’s Club’s (PWC) community-enrichment projects. Many volunteers were PWC members and athletes on ENMU’s Track and Field team, led by coaches Joshua Harden and Sinclair Pitts. Race directors are Betsy Chavez, Jeff Gentry, and Lee Hurren, with support from the City of Portales Street Department and Police Department.
The event was sponsored by Eastern Family Dentistry, Ace Hardware, Western Commerce Bank, J.P. Stone Community Bank, Farmer’s Country Market, Yucca Telecom, and The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce.
