Kickoff was at 7 PM and by the end of the 1st quarter, Portales was ahead 13-7. With fans sporting their Rams Red, Greyhound Stadium was buzzing with excitement heading into the 2nd quarter. The Dons from WLVHS tacked on a rushing touchdown to score first in the 2nd, tying the game at 13-13, then with their extra point, solidified a marginal lead. Portales answered on their next drive with a passing touchdown and field goal. WLVHS followed suit though, and took back their 1-point lead right before the two teams headed into the locker rooms for halftime.

The Dons got the ball to start the 3rd quarter, and the Rams quickly forced a punt. The stadium lit up with cheers as Portales managed to block the Dons’ punt, setting them up with great field position to start their drive. Shortly after, #2 Brayden Mignard rushed 2 yards for a touchdown, giving the Rams a lead of 26-21 over WLVHS. The teams’ scoring went back and forth the remainder of the 3rd quarter, and ended with the Dons ahead 34-32.

The same trend continued for the two teams in the final quarter of the game. With fans on the edge of their seats, a rushing touchdown for WLVHS and a passing touchdown for the Rams had the scoreboard sitting at 40-38 in favor of the Dons. Portales attempted a 2-point conversion, but came up short, leaving the Dons ahead by 2. The final blow was another rushing touchdown for WLVHS, who ended up winning 46-38 over Portales.

After the tough loss tonight, the Rams are now 0-2 this season. They will face Valencia High from Los Lunas on September 10 at Greyhound Stadium at 7 PM.
