Portales, NM – May 5, 2025 — The City of Portales is proud to announce an exciting new
chapter for our community’s youngest athletes as it officially takes over the management
and operation of the Youth Sports League. This move represents a strong, community
centered commitment to providing high-quality, inclusive, and accessible sports
programming that builds on the already strong foundation for all children in Portales and
the surrounding communities.

City Manager Chris Moyer, “By bringing the Youth Sports League under the City, we’re
creating a foundation that will serve our families, offer continued consistency, and allow us
to provide healthy youth engagement that benefits everyone”

The city will begin working closely with coaches, volunteers, and community partners to
ensure a steady and carefully managed transition. Plans are underway for city personnel to
start determining staffing and resource to prepare for the registration process after the
current activities’ seasons are finalized by Portales Municipal Schools. The goal is clear:
provide every child in Portales the chance to thrive through active participation in sports.
Portales Superintendent Sharon Rowley, a strong supporter of youth activities, also
praised the move: “When children are active and engaged, they do better in school and in
life. This change ensures that our students have opportunities to build confidence,
responsibility, teamwork, and a lifelong love of physical activity. Portales Schools will
continue to work with the city to utilize facilities and grow and support our young Rams.”
We want to be transparent with families and let them know that while we are committed to
offering a full range of youth sports, there may be some bumps along the way as we get
everything up and running again. We appreciate the community’s patience and support
during this transition.

Further information on registration, program timelines and opportunities to volunteer for
upcoming leagues will be announced throughout the summer, and families can follow the
City of Portales website and social media channels for updates. Together, we’re not just
building athletes—we’re building a stronger Portales.
