Verna (Powell) Briney October 9, 1963 ~ March 10, 2026 (age 62)

Memorial services for Verna (Powell) Briney, 62, will be held at 10:00 AM, Fri., Mar. 27, 2026 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel, with Michael Terry officiating.

Verna Briney was born Oct. 9, 1963 in Snyder, TX to the home of Vernell (Gilmore) and Clayton Powell, and passed from this life on March 10, 2026 in Abilene, TX surrounded by her loved ones. Verna was a 1982 graduate of Elida High Schools where she was on the volleyball, basketball and track teams. The early years of her adulthood were spent as a homemaker rearing her children. As a mother, Verna was an active supporter of her sons’ many activities. As a homemaker, she enjoyed baking and cooking as well as sewing. Many of you knew her from Allsups, she worked there too many years to count. She was also employed at the bank in Texas and Bus Driver for Portales Schools. On July 17, 2007 she was married to Shayne Briney. They traveled a lot together, and were living in Abilene, TX.

She is survived by her husband, Shayne, two sons, Kelby Widener and Caleb Widener and his wife, Braden; a granddaughter, Reese Widener; a step-son, Tyler Briney and his wife Berkley; three step-grandchildren, Josie, Bennett and Lainey Briney; a brother, Billy Powell; and three sisters, Cinda Hobbs and husband, Larry, Toni Powell, Sandra Baca and husband, Gilbert; a niece, Britnie Powell; her great-nephews, Preston and Parker Powell; nephews, Brady Jasso, and Erik Hays; a niece Shanna Hobbs; great nephew, Carson Coy, and great niece Camber Coy. She was preceded in death by her parents Clayton and Vernell Powell, maternal grandparents Monroe and Opal Gilmore, paternal grandparents Truman and Zula Mae Wood, and nephew Brennen Jasso.
