2018 will mark the 90th anniversary of the Maypole celebration at Portales High School. A tradition which has stood the test of time and signifies a right of passage for the senior class, Maypole is a time of celebration and achievement for all involved. A long-standing festivity, in which some things have changed over time; one thing that remains constant is the idea of tradition and what it means to students and the community alike.

One of the only high schools in the country to carry on the Maypole tradition for so many years, the Portales Maypole began in 1929 when Varnell McCall was coordinator. The seniors at the time wished to have a senior trip but lacked the funds. McCall then introduced the idea of Maypole, and 90 years later, it’s still as important to students as it was back then.

Barbara George has been involved with the event for 25 years, and although her role has varied from time to time, her commitment to the event has never ceased. Whether it was a dress rehearsal or the actual presentation of the wrapping of the pole, George has seen the event every year since 1967. The coordinator for many years, she was responsible for aiding in the inclusion of all senior students, so not to have to “try out” for the event, as well as the introduction of wrapping two poles in order to make room for all students to participate. Today, George’s involvement is different from running the whole production, as she was asked to collect photos from years past. “I’ve talked to old students who wrapped the pole, from all parts of the country. From South Carolina to Dallas…it’s been a lot of fun for me”, she says.   The photos will be part of a slide show that will celebrate 90 years of Maypole in Portales.

Maypole is a tradition which dates back to the 16th century in European countries as they celebrated the start of summer. As in years past, the celebration is signified by couples as they dance in formal wear and wrap the maypole with ribbon in a circular motion. A queen is selected by classmates every year, as well.

This year’s Maypole event will be held May 23-24th.

This is one we don’t want to miss!
