Eastern New Mexico University Department of Anthropology and Applied Archaeology announces the 23rd annual Cynthia Irwin-Williams Lectureship at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3.  Dr. Anna Novotny, Associate Professor of Physical Anthropology at Texas Tech University, will give a presentation titled “Ritual Emulation and Ancient Maya Elite Mortuary Traditions During the Classic Period at Cahal Pech, Belize.” The presentation is about an unusual elite tomb found at the site of Cahal Pech, a Classic period ancient Maya site in west-central Belize. She’ll talk about the multiple lines of evidence, including the body position, artifacts, and bone chemistry, she used to reconstruct who the people in the tomb were in life and why they were treated differently after their death.

Dr. Novotny’s presentation will be held in room 110 of the ENMU Art and Anthropology Building.  It is free and open to the public.
