The Winter Rumble Rage I boxing event is happening at 2 p.m. Saturdayin the Memorial Building in with doors opening at 1 p.m.

“The main reason I wanted to host one (a boxing event) here in Portales was to bring back boxing to Portales,” said Johnny “JD” Chavez, owner of JD’s Gym.

JD’s Gym, Henry’s Golden Gloves, and the King of Kings Boxing teamed up to host the event to fundraise money for future boxing tournaments.

Chavez said the money from the event will go towards helping aspiring boxers pay for food, travel expenses, and hotel rooms for the state tournaments in Albuquerque on April 6 and 7, as well as regionals in Denver, Colorado, on April 27, and Nationals in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on May 5 and 7.

Chavez said the event will have about 20 to 25 fights with participants ranging from 8 years old to 36 years old. He said some fighters have won tournaments and are competing again, and others are competing in their first bout.

Trophies and medals will be awarded to best matched bout boxers, and a fight of the night trophy will be given as well.

“The event will have winners and learners. I say learners because they’ll learn something from the event,” said Chavez.

Admission prices for the event will be:

  • Adults: $10

  • Seniors: $7

  • Veterans: $7

  • Children (5-17): $5

Chavez said he is hoping for a good turn out. The future show would be awarding gloves and uniforms.

Chavez said he hopes for a big turn out, so he can host another event in the future and that the Portales and Clovis communities come out to support the event.
