Carol Wood-Nation Obituary

Funeral services for Carol Jean Wood-Nation, 65, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, March 8, 2024, at the Dora Baptist Church with Pastor Benjamin Pritchett officiating.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Ben Pritchett, Mason Pritchett, Dusty Tipton, Billy Stacy, Brice Stacy, Christopher Wood and Garrett Wood serving as pallbearers.  Matthew Johnson will be an honorary pallbearer.

Carol Jean Wood-Nation was born on June 17, 1958, in Portales, New Mexico, to the home of Callie Mae (Thomas) and Cullen Ortis Wood, and died on March 3, 2024, in Portales, New Mexico.

Carol was an active Campfire Girl Leader in Portales for many years.  She was also a figure skater for many years.  She and her former husband, Robbie Johnson, owned the TJ Skateway skating rink in Portales.  She also played on a bowling team in Clovis.  Carol worked as a Pharmacy Tech at CJ’s Pill Box and for Walmart Pharmacy.

Carol had the opportunity to sing in the Nashville Starseek and was the Artist of the Year.  Carol worked as a Music Teacher for two years in Channing, Texas, and for eighteen years at Valencia and James Elementary Schools.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 2000.  Carol married Van Alex Nation on August 3, 2012, at Calvary Baptist Church in Portales.  Carol was an active piano player for Calvary Baptist Church, and at the Dora Baptist Church where she played and sang with her daughter Caron.  She also played the Hand Bells for the Portales Methodist Church and gave piano lessons to the community.  Carol served as the President of the Ladie’s Auxiliary #9515.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents Callie & Cullen Wood, and her sister Cathy Jane Wood.

She is survived by her husband, Van Nation of Portales; her children, Cara Tipton & husband Dusty of Clovis, Matthew Johnson & wife Tabitha of Portales and Caron Pritchett & husband Ben of Portales; her brother, Christopher J. Wood & wife Susan Michelle of Oklahoma; thirteen grandchildren; a niece, Sarah M. Wood, and a nephew, Garrett Wood.
