In light of recent events: the water restrictions, the canceling of public meetings, and the movement of City Hall, many Portales citizens are wondering what they can do to improve the current situation. In response to the aforementioned issues, three new contenders are running for city council. Michael Rackler is running for Ward D.

What made you choose to run?

“As a Christian, I think it’s my duty to serve.” Michael focuses on serving his community, first as a high school teacher, directing technology, then as a local business owner.

What issues are you most passionate about?

The most important issue, according to Michael, is water. He is trying to come up with solutions to present to the city to try to help. After that on his list, he wants to create unity in the community. “I think there is a lot of strife between different groups and organizations that needs to be corrected.” His third priority is fiscal responsibility. He believes having business owners on the council would be an advantage for meeting the fiscal needs in the community. His final main priority is transparency. “I don’t know if the community gets a lot of communication about what’s going on.”

In regards to the current water crisis, what are some solutions or ideas that you are willing to try?

Michael has quite a few ideas for solutions, as he’s been researching for some time. He’s considering if privatizing the water provider would be an improvement. Also, he wants to make sure our current system and well field are running as efficiently as possible. He mentioned an issue with water taps for new construction inhibiting community growth. Not to mention leasing water from strong agricultural wells, and conservation efforts that include encouraging xeriscaping and helping people make water-conscious decisions.

What qualities do you have that you believe will make you a good city councilor?

“Most of my positions have been in leadership,” answers Michael. Presenting to the school board, leading classrooms, and running a business has honed his decision making skills.

Is there anything you want to add?

“I would like the community to know that we’re not running against anyone that’s there, but that we just want to provide some new ideas and a new perspective, and serve our community.”
