Applications Being Accepted for Mayoral Appointment

Portales, NM — June 04 2026— The City of Portales announces a vacancy on the Portales City
Council representing Ward D. The City is now accepting letters of interest from qualified residents of
Ward D who wish to be considered for appointment to fill the unexpired term.

This vacancy will be filled by mayoral appointment, subject to confirmation by the City Council, in
accordance with applicable New Mexico law and municipal procedures.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
• Be a qualified elector of the City of Portales;
• Have resided within Ward D for the duration required by law; and
• Maintain residency in Ward D for the duration of service.
Appointment Authority and Governing Law

This appointment process is conducted pursuant to:
• NMSA 1978, § 3-12-7 – Governing vacancies in municipal offices, which provides that
vacancies in the office of councilor shall be filled by appointment by the mayor with the
consent of the governing body, unless otherwise provided by ordinance;
• NMSA 1978, § 3-8-1 et seq. – Pertaining to qualifications and duties of municipal officers; and
• Applicable City of Portales ordinances and resolutions, which establish procedural
requirements for appointments to the governing body.
The appointed councilor will serve until the next regular municipal election or as otherwise required
by law to complete the unexpired term.

and

Selection Process
Following the application deadline:
1. The Mayor will review all submissions;
