Donna Hammons Obituary
Donna Lynn Hammons, 76, of Portales, passed from this life early on the morning of Nov. 26, 2025 at her home. She was born Mar. 4, 1949, in Omaha, NE to the home of Eleanor Evelyn (Trent) and Donald Hale Barker. Mrs. Hammons lived her early life in Carlsbad, NM where she graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1967. On July 29, 1971, she was married to Donald Lee Hammons.
The Hammons moved to Portales in 1979. For several years she was employed at Dr. Simnacher’s Optometry office. Later she began working as a Teacher’s Aide at the local high school. In addition, she attended classes at Eastern New Mexico University, and graduated with a teaching degree. Mrs. Hammons was an English teacher at the Portales Junior High school until her retirement.
Donna enjoyed sewing and doing various types of crafts. Among the things she created were blankets which she in turn donated to either the Senior Citizens organization of the Domestic Violence Center in Clovis. For a number of years, she donated her time to help put out the Veteran’s flags for Memorial Day in the local cemetery.
Mrs. Hammons was a devoted wife and mother, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her two granddaughters. Being with them brought her as much joy as it did to each of them.
She is survived by Donald Hammons, her husband of more than 54 years of their home; her daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Brien McClary of Portales; her two granddaughters, Megan and Mitchell Moore and Kamryn and Zack McNeely and her great-granddaughter, Riley McNeely; a brother, Dennis Barker of CA and a sister, Maureen Oakes of Las Placitas, NM. She was preceded in death by both of her parents.
