Eastern New Mexico Athletics has suspended all athletic competition scheduled for the fall semester.

University officials announced Tuesday afternoon that Eastern New Mexico University will conduct the majority of classes online for the Fall 2020 semester and that the campus will be closed for the duration of the semester in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The University also announced that all on-campus events will be canceled and buildings on-campus will be closed to students and visitors except by appointment.

The announcement came in response to the state of New Mexico’s efforts to mitigate the pandemic as well as the request by governor Lujan Grisham.

Eastern New Mexico University will honor all athletic scholarship awards for the year despite the absence of competition or on-campus team activities for all sports.

A decision whether or not Eastern New Mexico will compete during the spring semester will come at a later date.

“First and foremost the safety of our student-athletes has been and always will be our top priority.” Eastern New Mexico Athletic Director Matt Billings said, “This decision reflects that mission and we look forward to safely bringing our student-athletes back onto campus and preparing for competition when that time comes.”
