RICHARDSON, Texas – The Lone Star Conference office recently announced the 2018-19 Academic Excellence Awards presented by Balfour as five Eastern New Mexico athletic programs were recognized for having the highest GPA in their respective sports.

The ENMU football program was the lone men’s program to claim the top GPA in its sport while the women’s programs continued to represent Eastern New Mexico well by claiming the top spots in four of the nine women’s Lone Star Conference sports, including: cross country, softball, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field.
Greyhound football has continued to be the pinnacle of academic excellence in the Lone Star, earning the academic championship for the third consecutive year. It marked the sixth time in the last seven seasons that Eastern New Mexico football won the academic championship in its respective sport.

Under first year head coach Kira Zeiter, the ENMU softball team claimed the academic championship in its sport after scoring the third-highest GPA among all academic champions with a 3.68 GPA. The Greyhounds softball program claimed its first ever academic championship since the awards began in 2014.
The Eastern running programs continue to produce scholar-athletes at a high level as the women’s cross country program notched the academic championship in its respective sport for the fourth straight year after finishing with a cumulative GPA of 3.404.

The women’s track and field program stayed at the top of the Lone Star academically as well by winning the academic championship with a cumulative GPA of 3.29 for the indoor and outdoor seasons. Along with the cross country program, the track and field program was named the academic champion for the fourth consecutive year.

Cameron claimed the men’s LSC Academic Excellence Award while Texas Woman’s was the recipient of the women’s award. The Eastern New Mexico women’s programs claimed the LSC Academic Excellence Award following the 2017-18 year while the Eastern men’s programs won the award twice following the 2013-14 and 2016-17 academic years.
