LUBBOCK, TEXAS – On Tuesday evening, #16 Lubbock Christian University bested Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball, 73-46, at Rip Griffin Center. The Hounds slip to 9-13 overall on the season, and 5-10 in conference action. The Lady Chaps improve to 23-5, with a 11-4 record.

The home team jumped in front from the start, opening the game on a 15-5 streak to take 10 points lead. From then, Iyanna McCurdy had a personal scoring spurt to put the Hounds back in contention. McCurdy out score the Lady Chaps 8-4 over a three-minute stretch, scoring three layups and a jumper, 19-13 LCU. LCU ended the first frame ahead 23-13.

In the second quarter both teams found points in bunches. First, LCU scored eight unanswered points, 31-15 LCU. Then, the Hounds sparked a mini 5-0 stretch for both teams. However, the Chaparrals responded with eight more unanswered points, until the Greyhounds added three points before the halftime buzzer, 39-23 LCU.

Out of the locker room, Lubbock Christian held the ENMU defensively over the first three and a half minutes of the 3rd period. McCurdy ended the scoring drought at the 6:15 mark with a free throw and Natalie Stice followed with a layup, 46-26. At the point, each team went back and forth trading baskets as the quarter continued. The Lady Chaps used three pointers to extended its lead 62-36 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The fourth quarter began with a MeMe Amand layup and a Stice layup in transition. LCU began an 11-4 run, extending the Hounds deficit to 73-44. The contest ended with a final score of 73-46, LCU.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Eastern finished the game shooting 31.4% (16-51) from the field, 2-8 from behind the arc, and 63.2% (12-19) at the charity stripe. Lubbock Christian bolstered a 43.1% (25-58) shooting on the night, with 39.1% from three, and 77.8% at the free throw line.
  • Hounds and Chaparrals were very close in terms of rebounding, 39-38 LCU, and in points in the paint, 28-24 LCU.
  • McCurdy led the scoring for Eastern, finishing with 14 points. Amand provided six points during the game, while Laura Rowe contributed five points from the bench.
  • Stacy Ajobiewe and Bella Stone were the teams leading rebounders, with seven rebounds and six rebounds, respectively.
  • Stone lead the team in assists with two, while Stice and Kamirah Decker each had two steals.

“We continued to fight for 40 minutes on the road tonight against and excellant team” said Head Women’s Basketball Coach Meghan De los Reyes. “We did a good job limiting Schulte, Burr, and Foster, but LCU’s depth showed. We are excited to bring everything we have to Greyhound Arena Saturday afternoon to honor our four fantastic seniors who have given their all for this program and have represented our school and community incredibly well on and off the court” said De los Reyes.

  • Ajobiewe tied a career best seven rebounds during the game, while Stone was one rebound shy of tying a personal best mark (six).
  • Lubbock Christian take the season sweep over Eastern, but the Hounds still lead the all-time series 24-17.
  • Eastern turn its attention to the final home game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 26, against Western New Mexico University. First tip is scheduled for 2 pm, with Senior Day ceremonies proceeding just before tip-off.
