The Lady Rams hosted Goddard High on April 23, 2021 for a conference basketball game. Tip off was at 7 PM with about 100 people in attendance.

Portales scored first, but were met with a quick response from Goddard, who then began taking the lead. The Lady Rams tried to answer Goddard’s points, but by the end of the first period, Portales was down 13-11.

Goddard kept their momentum rolling in the second, and outscored the Lady Rams by more than double the points. Af halftime, the Lady Rockets were ahead 33-20.

Goddard got the ball to start the third, but Portales got a defensive turnover, and capitalized on the swing in momentum. The Lady Rams began a scoring drive and nearly overcame their deficit. By the end of the third period, Portales had closed the gap to just 2 points, with the scoreboard at 34-32.

The fourth was intense between the two teams, and the lead fluttered back and forth as each shot was met by one from the other side. As the fourth period was coming to a close, Portales was in the lead by just 2 points after dropping a a solid 2 point field goal. A foul sent Goddard to the free throw line though, right at the last few moments of the game. After 2 successful shots, Goddard tied the game 50-50, sending the game into overtime.

With just a few extra minutes added to the clock, the pressure was on. The Lady Rams dropped a 3-point bucket at the start of overtime, and it was only met with a 2-point field goal from Goddard. This put Portales in the lead, and gave them the opportunity to keep it.

That is exactly what they did. With 13 extra points to Goddard’s 6, the Lady Rams pulled out a win in overtime. Both teams played hard, but Portales dug deeper and finished off the game with a winning score of 63-56.

The win means the Lady Rams are now 6-1 this season and face Carlsbad on the road on Saturday, April 24 at 6 PM.
