Maria Cordova Obituary

A rosary for Maria Cordova, 91, of Portales, will be recited at 9:00 A.M., Thursday, May 7, 2026, at St Helen Catholic Church.  Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, May 7, 2026, at St Helen Catholic Church with Fr. Francisco Carbajal officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with J.J. Gonzales, Mario Cordova, Felipe Aranda, Eric Saenz, Jonathan Cordova and Dominic Soria serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Emilio Aranda and Jordan Graham.

Maria Adelina (Baca) Cordova was born on August 15, 1934, in La Palma, New Mexico, to the home of Petrita (Ortega) and Jose Claudio Baca, and passed away on May 1, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Maria Cordova grew up in La Palma and Encino, New Mexico until her family moved to Floyd, New Mexico where she attended elementary school.  She was married to Fortunato Evaristo Cordova in November of 1956, in Carlsbad, New Mexico.  They later moved to Portales and were members of St. Helen Catholic Church.  They were married for almost 63 years when he passed away on December 2, 2019.

Maria loved to travel, play Bingo and especially loved playing cards with her kids and grandkids.  She enjoyed being outdoors and like taking care of her many cats.  She really enjoyed singing also, especially her favorite song “Paper Roses”.  Maria was fun to be around and she loved her family very much.  She loved birthdays and holidays when a lot of the family would come together.  Mother’s Day was her absolute favorite.   Maria will be loved and missed by all of her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fortunato Cordova in 2019; her parents, Jose and Petrita Baca; three children, Augustine Cordova in 2020, Gabriel Cordova in 2024 and Manuelita Cordova in 1958; three brothers, and three sisters.

Maria is survived by her children, Manuel Cordova of Portales, Regina Gonzales and husband Jimmy of Lubbock, Angela Cordova and husband Phil Aranda of Lovington, Stephanie Cordova of Portales, Adolpho Cordova and wife Veronica of Portales and Mary Cordova of Amarillo; one brother, Nino Baca and wife Viola of Portales; 22 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
