Obituary for Patricia Faye “Pat” Mathis (Nichols)

Graveside services for Patricia “Pat” Mathis, 68, of Albuquerque, will be at 2:00 PM, Thurs, Oct. 19, 2017 in the Portales Cemetery with David Lombrana officiating. Robert Mathis, Ron Mathis, Dennis Mathis, Tim Mathis, James Sower and Sarah Hatley will serve as pallbearers.
Patricia Faye Mathis, known to most as “Pat,” was born Oct. 19, 1948 in Hobbs, NM to the home of Ruby Ellen (Fields) and Ervin Andrew Nichols, and died Oct. 16, 2017 in Albuquerque where she had been living for the past several years. Pat and her family moved to Portales when she was a teenager. On Dec. 30, 1964, she was married to Robert Mathis. In 1970 they moved to Broken Bow, OK, but returned a few years later. Pat worked at both Portales Valley Mills and Borden Peanut Mill before finally being among the initial crew to open Sunland Peanuts. At other times she worked as a corrections officer, and even as a housekeeper at E.N.M.U. Pat moved to Albuquerque about 2011.
Pat was an avid reader. She loved to bake, and also enjoyed quilting. Family genealogy was fascinating to her, and she often wrote stories about her family history. Pat was also a poet.She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Somisawhel Mathis of Ribera, NM, Ron Mathis of Albuquerque, Dennis and Amy Mathis of Artesia and Tim Mathis of Portales; a daughter, La Tricia Mathis and James Sower of Albuquerque; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Richard Nichols of Kingsland, TX and Hampy and Patty Nichols of Slaten, LA; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Gail and Gregg North of Kingsland, TX and LaVerne Obenhaus of Lubbock, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Andrew and Eugene Nichols, a daughter, Lee Ellen Mathis who died at birth, and by her husband, Robert Mathis who died Mar. 1, 2008.
