PORTALES, N.M. – Sophomore Desiree Morgas was named the 2019 Lone Star Conference Newcomer of the Year and Second Team All-Lone Star Conference as the league announced the 2019 Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer All-Conference team on Thursday evening.

Morgas was the lone player from the Hounds to be named to the all-conference team while junior Caitlyn Schmidt was named to the 2019 Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer All-Academic Team for the second straight season. DBU’s Maggie Scales earned Player of the Year honors as the Patriots had eight players represented on the all-conference team after finishing undefeated in Lone Star Conference play.

Morgas becomes the first Greyhound to be named the Lone Star Conference Newcomer of the Year since Fabienne Wilson earned the honor following the 2013 season. The El Paso, Texas native led the team with nine goals on the season, the fifth highest total in the Lone Star Conference this season.

She combined those nine goals with four assists to finish with 22 points for the season, the fifth-highest point total in a single season in program history and had the third most shot attempts per game in the LSC with an average of 3.76 attempts per contest.
Morgas had four game winning goals throughout the year and saved her best soccer for the end of the season as she finished with goals in five out of the final six games and totaled 15 of her points in the final eight games of the regular season. She also broke the Eastern New Mexico single season record for made penalty kicks in a season with three.

Schmidt was named to the league’s all-academic team for the second-straight season for her combined efforts in the classroom and on the field. Schmidt is currently majoring in Communicative Disorders and continued to elevate her play on the field this season.

The Roswell, N.M. native finished the season with the second highest point total on the team with seven points after recording two goals and three assists. She registered five shot on goal attempts for the season and provided a highlight moment for the Hounds when she tied the contest up against UT Tyler on Oct. 3rd in the 74th minute to provide the Hounds a chance to tack on the game-winning goal by Morgas just minutes later.
