Arrangements for a memorial service for Dr. Olimpo Oviedo, known as Ollie to family and friends, will be announced at a later time.

Dr. Oviedo was born Mar. 4, 1940 in Girardot, Tolima, Columbia to the home of Emilia (Celis) and Lino Oviedo and passed from this life on Oct. 16, 2025 at his home in Portales at the age of 85.  Ollie immigrated to the United States while still in his teen years to gain his education.  He earned his PhD in English Literature from New York University, and taught in several different colleges and universities.  In 1989, he moved to Portales and was the head of the Graduate Program for English Literature at ENMU until his retirement.  In addition, he was a published author and also acted as editor for several publications.  He had also translated some books from Spanish into English.

On Aug. 14, 1997 in Clovis, he was married to Annette Copher.  Ollie enjoyed classical music and art.  He was very fond of his dogs, especially Beagles.  He was also a regular at local restaurants to drink coffee and visit with his friends.

He is survived by a son, Kevin Ferguson of Wishaw, Scotland; two daughters, Emilia Oviedo and her boyfriend, Juan Benavidez of Portales and Isabelle and Stephen Bustamante of Portales;two grandchildren, Kimberley Ferguson, and Grant Dingwall; two great-grandchildren, Greyson and Landry Dingwall; four brothers, Lino Oviedo of CA, Fabio Oviedo of Columbia, Gustavo Oviedo of New York, and Hernan Oviedo of Columbia and a sister, Alicia Saldana also of Columbia.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Angelino and a sister, Blanca Selmira.
