Paul Zion Obituary

A Memorial Service for Paul Monroe Zion of Portales, New Mexico will be held at the Portales Church of God, 1427 E. Amazon Street, on January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. to accommodate those who need time to arrange travel.
Paul Monroe Zion, 53, of Portales, New Mexico was born July 27, 1970, in Northampton, Massachusetts to Phyllis Elaine (Smith) Zion and Donald Edward Zion and died at home unexpectedly of a heart attack on November 25, 2023. Paul was a 1988 graduate of Portales High School. He served in the NM Army National Guard, Charlie Battery, 4th Battalion/200thADA as Chaparral Missile System Crewmember (16P). After military service Paul worked as a motorcycle technician for Yamaha and taught mechanics in a high school program in Washington. Paul loved anything to do with motorcycles and enjoyed being able to pass knowledge of repair and maintenance on to the younger generation. Paul was also passionate about cooking and later earned a culinary arts degree.

Paul had a flair for writing and used the pen name “Moon Dreamer.” His favorite farewell greeting was “Catch you in the wind.” He enjoyed fishing and was notorious for his snake boots! He had a big heart and loved to help others any way that he could whether it be home maintenance, cooking a turkey for Thanksgiving, or helping others financially when he was able.

Paul is survived by a daughter, Aurora Edwards and granddaughter, Evangeline Fae Edwards, both of West Richland, Washington, son, Zachariah Zion of Yelm, Washington, his companion Donna Frazier and her two daughters, Sienna Frazier and Zoe Frazier of Portales, NM, mother, Phyllis (Zion) McDermott of Portales, NM, four siblings, Daniel Zion of Portales, NM, David Zion of Spokane, WA, Matthew Zion of Johnstown, CO, Teresa (Zion) Williams of Fort Worth TX, and an uncle, Eugene Smith of Del Rio, TX. Paul is also survived by his former wife, Michelle Zion, of Yelm, Washington and his first wife Congetta Findley and many other friends, cousins, nieces, nephews, and loved ones who will miss him dearly.
