Press Release: The City of Portales

The City of Portales is using the month of May to protect pets and people through education and free pet registration.

All cats and dogs over three months old that live inside Portales city limits can be registered free during the month of May. Registration is required, and beginning in June, City of Portales Animal Control will begin enforcement. Pets that are not registered may result in a citation of up to five hundred dollars.

To help residents comply, Caprock Veterinary Clinic is offering 50% off rabies vaccines throughout May, and the City is also working with another veterinarian to bring a low-cost rabies clinic to town, paired with a free registration event.

Residents can register their pets in person at the Portales Animal Shelter, seven days a week from 10 to 12 and 1 to 3, all through May. You do not need to bring your pet, only proof of a valid rabies vaccination.

With a confirmed rabies case in the area involving a dog bite, the City has the staff in place and will begin active enforcement in June. Protect your pets, protect your family, and take advantage of free registration this May.
