W. E. Dever, known to virtually everyone as “Dub,” was born Oct. 29 1936 in Snyder, TX, to the home of Una Lee (McGinty) and Marvin Elijah Dever, and passed from this life in Portales on May 7, 2026.  The Dever family moved to Roosevelt County in 1941.  He was a 1954 graduate of Portales High School, and shortly after on June 7, 1954 he was married to Jeanette Kerr.  The couple was able to celebrate 71 years of marriage before his death.

For most of his adult life, Dub drove trucks.  Through the years he had driven for Southwest Canners, Kenneth Cook, Jack Jennings, and Rick Ledbetter among others.  He was a member of the University Baptist Church.  Mr. Dever was extremely friendly and virtually never met a stranger.  Dub loved children, and his grandsons and great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life.  Above all else he enjoyed his times hunting and fishing with them.  In more recent years he got great satisfaction from eliminating squirrels from his yard.  Ingeniously, he could tell if one returned, because he would often trap them and paint their tails white before releasing them in a remote area.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette of their home; a daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Terry White of Clovis, NM; three grandsons, Cody and Lindsey White, Tanner and Nicole White and Tyler and Amanda White; eight great-grandchildren, Shayla, Wesson, River, Colton, Marcus and Tyson White, Courtney Bradley and Lexee Leppke; and three sisters, Billie Wells of Portales, Mattielene Hamilton of Shoreacres, TX and Mittie Elizabeth Morrison of La Porte, TX.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Una Lee and Marvin Dever, four brothers, Jerome, Carl, Alvin and Leroy Dever and three sisters, Kathy Caywood, Marlene Schrock and Evelyn Dever who died as an infant.
