Late winter, early spring is the ideal time to work in your yard and prepare it for the months ahead.  It is a great time to divide perennials if you haven’t already done so.  Also, deep water your beds and your trees and shrubs.  Look for signs of winter damage and prune accordingly.  This is not the time to fertilize your trees and shrubs.  Wait to do this until you are sure we have had our last freeze.

However, it is the ideal time to fertilize your lawn and use a pre-emergent.  If you are anxious to plant something, the only thing you can plant without risking damage or covering plants is lettuce, radish, carrot, spinach and other cool weather crops, as well as Pansy’s.  With the pending nice days and higher temperatures in the near future, avoid planting tender annuals in the ground.  You can plant them in pots, but may have to bring them in or cover them when we dip below freezing, and we will have more cold weather and freezes before Spring is in full swing.  While you wait for the best planting weather, turn your gardens and add compost, manure, etc so when the ground temperature reaches 60 degrees you will be ready.
Thanks, Curt.
