PORTALES, NM – Jan. 26, 2022 – On Tuesday, Jan. 25, Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernandez, the U.S. Representative for the Third Congressional District of New Mexico, visited the ENMU-Portales campus, where she met with student leaders and administrators.

Congresswoman Leger Fernandez discussed several topics with ENMU Chancellor Patrice Caldwell. Some topics reviewed during their meeting include the importance of Hispanic Serving Institutions, the future challenges Universities face in terms of budget, student enrollment at state Universities, cultural programs at ENMU and the challenges ENMU has faced with the COVID-19 Pandemic.

At the roundtable with student leaders that afternoon, she discussed her proposed legislation on substance abuse as well as improved access to health and mental health for University students. Also discussed was the ENMU safe ride program, a free program designated for any and all current ENMU students to be picked up and transported safely home anywhere within Portales city limits when in unsafe situations or unable to drive due to being under the influence.

Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández, who was elected in Nov. 2020, holds a leadership role with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as Freshman Representative. Congresswoman Leger Fernández serves as chair of the Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States. She has also been appointed to the House Committee on Education and Labor, the House Committee on Natural Resources, and the Committee on House Administration.
