Teachers and students in Roosevelt County will join schools from more than 40 countries next week in recognizing International Walk to School Day, an event that promotes the importance of physical activity and safe routes to school.

This is the fourth year Roosevelt County elementary-school students have walked around their school in October as a part of Healthy Kids Healthy Communities, a New Mexico Department of Health program that builds on community efforts to motivate children and families to eat healthier, be more physically active and achieve healthy weights. All schools in the county will participate by walking sometime during their school day.

Dawn Kuchta, the P.E. Coach at Floyd Elementary said, “My students are always excited about participating in this national event.  They are so proud when they receive their certificate!”

Healthy Kids Roosevelt County also supports school salad bars, community and school gardens, including the James Elementary award-wining garden, and healthy fundraisers to help children and their families create healthy eating and physical activity habits.
