3/5/2020 | Track & Field PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico senior distance runner Mercy Rotich has been named the February Greyhound of the Month as voted upon by members of the Eastern New Mexico athletic department.

Rotich finished in first place at the 2020 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship meet on Feb. 21-22 in both the 3,000 meter and 5,000 meter races. Her time of 17:16.52 in the 5,000 meter race broke the Lone Star Conference and Eastern New Mexico school record for the event.

The Eldorat, Kenya native set provisional qualifying marks in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter races with times of 9:44.55 at the 2020 New Mexico Collegiate Classic in the 3,000 and 17:02.88 in the 5,000 meter race at the LSC Indoor Championships in the 5,000 meter race. Rotich won first place in both 5,000 meter races of the season at the Texas Tech Shootout and the LSC Indoor Championships and finished in fourth place or higher in all three of her 3,000 meter races for the season as well.

She was named an All-Lone Star Conference First Team selection after securing 20 points throughout the 2020 LSC Indoor Championship meet and has established herself as one of the best female distance runners in the history of Eastern New Mexico University.

Rotich will continue her Eastern New Mexico career during the outdoor track and field season set to begin on Mar. 20 at the Spring Break Classic hosted by West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas.
