Slow-Cooker Black Eyed Peas and Greens

Dec 29, 2023

Slow-Cooker Black Eyed Peas and Greens
  • Eating black-eyed peas and greens on New Year’s Day is a Southern tradition that dates back to the Civil War era. It is believed that consuming black-eyed peas and greens on New Year’s Day brings good luck and prosperity in the coming year 12. The peas represent coins, the greens represent paper money, and the cornbread represents gold 1.

According to a recent article by the Greenwood Commonwealth, the tradition of eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day is a bit like tossing a coin into a wishing well – diners are eating in hopes of a better year ahead 3. Another article by ABC News suggests that the tradition of eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day is a way to attract prosperity in the new year 4.
