Supreme Court Commission on Equity and Justice to hold first meeting

SANTA FE – The Supreme Court Commission on Equity and Justice will meet for the first time next week.

The meeting on Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon, is open to the public and will be live streamed on the New Mexico Courts YouTube channel.

The Court established the commission to study issues related to bias and inequities in the state’s justice system and promote diversity among judges and judicial employees.

“The commission will closely examine our justice system to identify its shortcomings and recommend improvements to ensure equal treatment for all New Mexicans,” said Torri Jacobus of Albuquerque, the commission’s chair. “Before we can develop the proper remedies, we must first acknowledge that flaws and biases exist in our institutions of justice.”
