PLAINVIEW, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Volleyball handled Wayland Baptist University, 3-1, on Tuesday evening at the Hutcherson Center. The Greyhounds improve to 3-2 on the season, with the Pioneers slipping to 0-5.

The opening set began with a back and forth with the home ahead 7-5. At that point, the Greyhounds put together a 10-1 rally to leap ahead 15-8. In the run, ENMU found kills from Adriana Puni (two), Rylee Mapes (2), and Jordan O’Connor-Dempsey (1). Eastern ended the first set on top, 25-15.

ENMU opened the second set with a large stretch, 13-1, to establish a big lead. Mikaela Garvinaccounted for four kills in the stretch, while O’Connor-Dempsey had two kills, then combined with Garvin for a block. The Greyhounds bumped their advantage to 20-5, eventually taking the set 25-8.

The middle frame saw the Pioneers hold a slight lead, with the home team posting a 11-7 score line. Eastern brought things back even at 14-14, and the tie score remained at 22-22. With the crowd behind them, WBU picked up the third set 25-23 over ENMU.

In the fourth set, ENMU began with quick 8-4 advantage and improved that to 18-12. Gracelyn Stubbs contributed five kills to help build the Greyhounds lead. The Hounds closed out the match with four kills of their final eight points, with Puni posting two and Garvin and Anjolina Perez adding one, winning the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Greyhounds nearly doubled up the Pioneers on kills, 51-26, while also holding the edge in digs, 68-43.
  • Garvin and Stubbs both provided double digit kills, 11 for Garvin and 10 for Stubbs. Puni and O’Connor-Dempsey each netted nine kills during the game.
  • Qitana Sapiga posted a match high 18 assists, with Kayla Ison adding 16 assists.
  • Getsemani Carrasco provided 14 digs during the contest, with Ison and Daeja Rodriguez adding seven digs.
  • O’Connor-Dempsey finished with one solo block and two block assists, while Puni and Garvin both finished with two block assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Hounds bested WBU for the 19th time in program history since 2006. Tonight’s meeting was the first matchup between the programs since 2011.
  • Puni posted a career best mark in kills with nine, while O’Connor-Dempsey posted a season best in kills (nine). Sapiga lifted a season high 18 assists in the contest.
  • Rodriguez and Eliana Luteru saw their first action of the season.
  • As a team, the Greyhounds posted a season best for assists (47) and digs (68).
  • Eastern will return to the Lone Star state over the weekend for its second tournament of the season at the Denton Volleyfest. First, ENMU will play Northwestern Oklahoma State, 9 a.m., and Ouachita Baptist, 3 p.m., on Friday. The next day, the Greyhounds face off against East Central, 9 a.m., and Missouri Southern St., 3 p.m.
