SAN ANGELO, Texas – Eastern New Mexico volleyball pulled the first set from nationally ranked #6 Angelo State, but ASU claimed a 3-1 win over Eastern on Saturday afternoon at the Junell Center-Stephens Arena. Eastern are set back to 6-17, along with a conference standing of 6-9. Angelo State improve to 21-3, with a 14-1 conference record.

It was the Greyhounds who jumped out to an early 7-4 lead, using a 4-0 run to establish the gap. The Hounds found three straight kills courtesy of Gracelyn StubbsKali Nelson, and Jasmine Gannonin the run. Angelo State brought the score tied at 16-16, this proved to spark an ENMU stretch that would decide the set. From 16-16, the Hounds went on a 9-3 streak to take the first set 25-19. Eastern benefited off of kills from Adriana Puni and Mikaela Garvin, along with the defense providing two blocks in the run.

The Rambelles would respond immediately for the second set. The home team tallied an early 15-8 lead over the Greyhounds, forcing the Hounds into two timeouts. ASU cruised through the rest of the set, eventually win 25-15, this tied the match at 1-1.

Angelo State established a slight early lead 12-11 over the Hounds, but both teams were back and forth with each other through the beginning of the set. The Rambelles created a gap of 17-12, but Eastern closed the gap to 17-16 as the set continued to be close. ASU pushed Eastern to set point at 24-18, but then ENMU supplied a late comeback. Kills from Garvin and Gannon pushed the Rambelles to the brink, but Angelo State sealed the set 25-22, taking a 2-1 set lead.

Both teams went back and forth to open the fourth set, pitting the score at 11-11. From that scoreline, Angelo tallied five straight points to build some separation from the Hounds. Eastern would bring the deficit to just two points, but ASU closed the match on a 9-3 streak, winning the final set 25-17, and the match 3-1.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Rambelles bested the Hounds for kills (62-45), assists (58-42), and digs (65-54). The Hounds held the edge in blocks, 9-5.
  • Nelson and Gannon each provided 11 kills on the afternoon, with Garvin adding eight in attack.
  • Rae Sapiga paced Eastern with 16 assists, with Qitana Sapiga just behind with 15 assists.
  • Daejia Rodriguez 13 digs overall, while Q.Sapiga added 11 digs to the effort.
  • Stubbs picked up six total blocks on the day, with two solo blocks and four block assists.

  • Q.Sapiga supplied their sixth double-double of the season, providing 15 assists and 11 digs.
  • Angelo State still hold the series advantage over the Hounds, 53-26.
