Clovis, NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, announced today that Giovanni Brown-Johnson, 19, has plead no contest to Second-Degree Murder in connection with the fatal shooting of 16-year-old, Demetrius Anderson.
The incident occurred on August 27, 2024, when Clovis Police Department officers responded to a shots fired call at the Clovis Apartments. Upon arrival, Officer Jesus Sarabia located a male victim lying on the pavement suffering from gunshot wounds to the left arm and abdomen. Officer Sarabia immediately applied a tourniquet to the victims’ left arm to stop the flow of blood and began CPR. Emergency medical crews arrived shortly thereafter and transported the victim to Plains Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
The victim was identified as Demetrious Anderson, 16. The investigation revealed that both individuals were in possession of firearms –––a 9mm and a .45 caliber pistol.
Following the investigation, Brown-Johnson, 18-years-old at the time, was identified as the shooter. At sentencing, District Court Judge, David Reeb, imposed a sentence of 11 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections, with no eligibility for parole until at least 10 years have been served.
District Attorney Quentin Ray stated:
“These senseless acts of violence between teenagers have to stop. One 16-year-old is dead, and a young man will now spend more than a decade behind bars. This tragedy affects not just the families involved but the entire community.”
The case was prosecuted by Special Prosecutor, Brett Carter, and the defendant was represented by Todd Holmes of the Law Office of the Public Defender.
