KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico baseball team wrapped up its 2019 season with a doubleheader loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sunday, falling 6-2 in the first game before losing 10-6 in the finale.
In the first game of the day, the Javelinas (29-19, 13-11 Lone Star Conference) scratched across the first run on a Kohl Ullman RBI single in the bottom of the second to make it a 1-0 game.
The Greyhounds (15-33, 3-21 LSC) answered right back in the top of the third as Joel Paulino ripped a bases loaded double to right, scoring Nicholas Ankerman and Malcolm Smith to take a 2-1 lead.
However, Kingsville came right back in the bottom of the third with a four-run frame to reclaim the advantage and held off the Hounds for the remainder of the contest.
The Javelinas scored their six runs on 10 hits while the Greyhounds plated their two runs on six hits and committed one error.
Paul Tapia and Tristian Bowden tallied four of the Hounds’ six hits as each batter slashed 2-for-3 from the plate while Paulino served as the top run producer after knocking in two with a 1-for-3 performance from the plate.
Liam Sabiston went the distance in his only start of the season, throwing six innings and giving up six runs, five of which were earned on 10 hits, four walks, with four strikeouts.
The Greyhounds were able to grab the early momentum in the first inning of the second game. After Ankerman, Malcolm Boehm, and Ryan Anderson each hit singles to load the bases, Bowden was able to bring Ankerman and Boehm home with a single up the middle, making it a 2-0 Hounds advantage. In Eastern’s next at-bat, Chris Padilla drove in Anderson with a single up the middle as well to stretch the lead to three.
Eastern held the lead until the bottom of the third, when the Javelinas put together a six-spot to the lead at 6-3.
The Greyhounds were able to mount a rally in the sixth inning by taking advantage of some erratic Kingsville pitching, scoring all three of their runs in the fame on wild pitches to tie the score at 6-all.
However, the Javelinas were able to pull away by scoring four unanswered runs over the final four innings to end the Hounds’ season in a 10-6 loss.
Texas A&M-Kingsville scored its 10 runs on 11 hits made two errors while Eastern notched its six runs on seven hits and made one error.
Ankerman reached base three times in his final game with the Greyhounds, going 2-for-4 with a walk and run while Anderson batted 2-for-4 with scored two runs. Bowden was Eastern’s top run producer after going 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
