Johnnie Ray Schlenker was promoted to Heaven on August 1, 2026, at the age of 87, surrounded by the love of his beautiful wife of 46 years, Lynne, and their four children.

Johnnie was born on May 19, 1939, in Clovis, New Mexico, to John Raymond and Hazel Maurine Schlenker. Born near the Texas–New Mexico border, Johnnie spent his childhood on the family farm, raising livestock and dairy cattle. He was incredibly proud of his parents, who taught him the importance of integrity, hard work, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for life. These lessons became the foundation for the remarkable life he would go on to lead.

Johnnie earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Eastern New Mexico University. His passion for storytelling, creativity, and the performing arts became the calling that shaped his life.

In the summer of 1969, Johnnie moved to California to pursue acting at Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts (PCPA). Soon afterward, he began teaching at Righetti High School in Santa Maria, California, where he pioneered and founded the theater department. Through his vision, encouragement, and dedication, Johnnie impacted countless young lives, inspiring generations of students to discover their creativity, confidence, and voice.

A legendary storyteller, creative spirit, and gatherer of people, Johnnie had a rare gift for bringing joy to audiences both large and small. In 1975, he founded the Great American Melodrama, a beloved Central Coast institution that has brought laughter, entertainment, and cherished memories to generations of families for more than five decades.

In 1979, Johnnie married the love of his life, Lynne, in front of the historic Wawona Hotel in Yosemite National Park. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on love, family, faith, and the theater they cherished. They raised four beloved children—Darren Rayner, Ryan Rayner, Amanda Schlenker Stewart, and Jennifer Schlenker-Bryce—while building a thriving family business and a home filled with laughter, hospitality, and unconditional love.

Johnnie loved his life’s work, but his greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Whether gathered around the dinner table, backstage at the theater, or on family adventures, Johnnie delighted in bringing people together, encouraging those he loved, and making every person feel valued. Until his final days, he continued to express his deep and unwavering love for his beloved “Lynnie.”

Beyond the stage and theater, Johnnie found some of his greatest joys in the simple moments spent with the people he loved most. He treasured fishing with his children, camping with family and friends, relaxing at the beach, traveling with Lynne, and creating lifelong memories together. Whether on an adventure, gathered around a campfire, or simply enjoying God’s creation, Johnnie had a gift for turning ordinary moments into lasting memories.

Johnnie is survived by his devoted wife, Lynne Schlenker; his loving children, Darren Rayner, Ryan Rayner, Amanda Schlenker Stewart, and Jennifer Schlenker-Bryce; his eleven cherished grandchildren, Ann-Marie Rayner, Dallas Rayner, Ava Stewart, Shane Stewart, Luke Stewart, True Stewart, Eden Bryce, Jack Bryce, Owen Bryce, Hudson Bryce, and Kate Bryce; his four treasured great-grandchildren, Jed Vitello, Noah Vitello, Liam Vitello, and Brooks John Rayner; his beloved sister, Patsy Neely Gardner; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Raymond and Hazel Maurine Schlenker, and his beloved sister, JoDay Cope.

With the support of her children and the incredible staff who have helped carry Johnnie and Lynne’s vision forward, Lynne will continue guiding the legacy of the Great American Melodrama, ensuring that the laughter, creativity, and joy Johnnie brought to the Central Coast for more than five decades will continue to inspire audiences for generations to come.

At 10:00 AM, Sept. 11, 2026, at Central Christian Church in Portales there will be a Celebration of Johnnie’s life.  An additional Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at New Life Community Church in Pismo Beach, California. Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration, share memories, and give thanks for the immeasurable impact Johnnie had on so many lives.

Though the curtain has closed on this earthly stage, we rejoice knowing that Johnnie has taken his final bow and entered the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ. His life was marked by unwavering faith, boundless creativity, generous hospitality, steadfast integrity, and an enduring love for his family. His greatest performance was not on a stage, but in the way he lived each day—with compassion, joy, humility, and a heart that always pointed others toward hope.

Johnnie’s story lives on in every life he touched, every student he encouraged, every audience he made laugh, and every member of his family who carries forward his legacy of faith, love, creativity, and kindness. Though he will be deeply missed, the impact of his remarkable life will continue for generations to come.
