Drivers who speed will receive a Notice of Infraction beginning April 19th
Portales, NEW MEXICO (April 16, 2024) – Portales begins enforcement of its automated speed camera program on April 19, 2024 to encourage safe driving in school zones. The school zone speed camera enforcement program began with a 30-day warning period giving motorists time to change their driving habits before payable notices of violation begin April 19th.
One of the most important goals of Portales’s speed enforcement program is saving lives and protecting our most vulnerable populations. Accidents from speeding are preventable.
Speed is one of the biggest determinants in whether an accident results in a serious injury or fatality, and reducing speeds to the posted speed limits will save lives. An automated speed program protects pedestrians and cyclists by reminding motorists to slow down and obey the speed limits.
A pedestrian or cyclist hit by a vehicle traveling 20 mph has a 95% chance of living. That same pedestrian or cyclist hit by a vehicle traveling more than 40 mph has an 80% chance of dying.
The safety program uses fixed speed cameras to enforce the speed limits which are located at:
· Portales Junior High School (South Abilene Avenue) – Southeast bound
· Portales Junior High School (South Abilene Avenue) – Northwest bound
· Valencia Elementary School (South Roosevelt Road) – Northbound
· Valencia Elementary School (South Globe Avenue) – Southbound
At these locations, Portales will enforce school zone violations while the beacons are flashing and speed violations when the beacons are off.
Speed cameras monitoring system captures photos and videos of violators who speed. If a driver speeds, the driver receives a Notice of Infraction from the Portales Police Department sent to the car’s registered owner. Photo evidence will be on the Notice of Infraction and all photo and video evidence will be available online at https://zerofatality.com/ for the driver to review.
We look forward to using these cameras to help decrease crashes and injuries in Portales, becoming a force multiplier for our officers as they answer other calls throughout the City.
